5 ways to manage skin purging

Have you ever started new skin supplements and you’ve noticed subtle skin changes? That adjustment period where your skin may look slightly unsettled before you get that clear, healthy-looking skin? This may be down to the influx of all those good nutrients. When the body gets the right nutrition, it can kick start certain ‘clean-up’ processes that help get rid of any impurities. Skin is one of the organs that the body uses to get rid of these impurities. This is a good thing – it means what you are doing is working.

Skin purging can occur when you start a new skincare product or a few weeks after you’ve started. Each person is different and not everyone will experience skin purging or the same symptoms e.g.: you may notice differences in your skin or energy levels. Remember skin health is a journey and results can take up to 12 weeks, just like any other lifestyle changes you incorporate including going to the gym or a new diet. The good news is our skin researchers recommend incorporating the five habits below to support your skin and wellbeing during this time.

1. Eat a portion of cruciferous vegetables every day

Cruciferous vegetables are high in fibre and good sources of phytonutrients, which are key in helping clear the impurities from your skin. Cruciferous vegetables include:

  • Broccoli
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Collard greens
  • Bok choy
  • Radish
  • Turnips

All these food sources also help with regular bowel movements, which help support the body in removing toxins.

2. Don’t give up, consistency is key

If you do experience any skin changes, it’s important to not give up. Consistency is key for results when taking supplements. Any skin purging usually lasts a few days to a few weeks so keep preserving – your skin will thank you for it!

3. Drink water

During the skin purging process, your skin may appear drier. Increase your intake of water to ensure your skin is getting the moisture it needs. We recommend you drink 1-2 litres of water a day to flush the toxins out your body.

4. Mix it up and move

Gentle exercise is a great way to use up your daily fuels as well as stress hormones released during the day. Simple switch ups like walking during your lunch break, following a ten-minute yoga session on YouTube or dancing with family or friends can help encourage lymphatic drainage.

5. Include a variety of vegetables in your diet

When adding vegetables to your meals, remember to add some variety to ensure your body is getting a wide range of vitamins and nutrients for overall wellbeing.

For radiant and glowing skin, the key is patience and consistency. It’s a journey and any new lifestyle changes you make; results don’t happen overnight. If you do notice any changes to your skin – this is normal. Remember to include a wide variety of cruciferous vegetables every day, drink 1-2 litres of water daily, you can introduce new supplements slowly and you’ll soon be on your way to beautiful, glowing skin.
