What to look for in omega supplements
![]()
Unregulated. Oxidised. Rancid. Three words you don’t want associated with your omega supplements. But did you know, there is no legal standard in the UK to regulate omega supplements?
Without an official governing body, brands can use questionable ingredients, preservatives and methods to create omega supplements – meaning yours might not be as clean and efficacious as you would think.
As you probably already know, our team at Advanced Nutrition Programme™ are perfectionists. So, who better to ask for advice? Keep reading for everything you need to know about omega supplements, from why they’re good for our health to what to look out for on the label.
Benefits of omega supplements
Omega fatty acids are essential for our health. They support brain, heart and eye health. They’re the building blocks of almost every cell in our bodies. They calm inflammation, support skin health and hydrate from within. They’re often known as ‘healthy fats’ due to their multifaceted benefits.
The NHS recommends we eat two portions of oily fish a day to support our omega intake, so if you’re not a lover of ocean’s catch or opt for vegan options, omega supplements can help fill the nutritional gaps.
What is TOTOX?
It means ‘total oxidisation score’. When omega fish oils are exposed to oxygen, the quality and efficacy are affected – and can make the oil rancid. A lower TOTOX score means a fresher, higher quality fish oil.
The average TOTOX score for fish oils in the UK is 23. Our omegas supplement, Skin Omegas+, has a rating of under 12. We use high quality anchovy oil that is certified by Friends of the Sea, and we filter the oil using gentle, natural methods with charcoal and steam.
