Prebiotic Powder Red Flags
There’s a lot of buzz around ingredients to avoid in supplements – especially probiotic and prebiotic powder. But trying to keep track of what to look out for can make our heads spin. So, we went straight to the experts...
Our in-house Research Manager and registered nutritionist, Tanya, gives us the red and green flags to look for when shopping for your prebiotic powder. So you can trust what you’re taking.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Red flag: contains probiotics
Did you know? “Probiotics aren’t stable in powder formulas,” explains Tanya. “They degrade quickly when exposed to air, which means they lose their gut-supporting power.”
Instead, look for prebiotics or fibre. These can remain stable in powder form, so you’ll get all the gut care benefits. Skin Integrate 28 is powered by 28 high-performance ingredients, including prebiotics and plant fibres with polyphenols.
Alternatively, our Biome supplement capsules contain billions of beneficial bacteria and come in aluminium packs, flushed with protective nitrogen to ensure they remain stable.

Red flag: artificial sweeteners & flavourings
Sometimes hard to see, but many prebiotic powders and supplements are formulated with artificial sweeteners and flavourings to make the taste a little more palatable. Unfortunately, what they add in sweetness they take away in wellbeing benefits.
“Additional sugars and sweeteners can throw off the balance of our gut bacteria, which can lead to dysbiosis - an imbalance of our gut microbiota,” says Tanya.
Keep an eye out for sweeteners on product labels and opt for a prebiotic powder without ingredients you don’t need (or can’t pronounce).
Red flag: cardboard containers
Sustainable, yes. But paper and cardboard packaging for powders can lead to water vapour transmission, which degrades the formula and makes it less effective.
Look for metal or glass containers instead, which ensure the formula stays fresh and won’t oxidise (react with oxygen in the air). Plus, both aluminium and glass are both infinitely recyclable, making them alternative planet-friendly options.
Red flag: no trials
If you’re spending your hard-earned cash on a supplement or prebiotic powder for your wellbeing routine, you want to make sure you’re going to get results. The truth is – most brands don’t carry out testing to make sure both ingredients and the final formula are safe, stable and effective.
“Look out for trial results and statistics on packaging. A triple threat of independent studies, clinical trials and third-party testing means all of the above has been tested and approved, so you can trust the formula you’re taking,” explains Tanya.
