Collagen: banish the myths
Collagen. The buzzword in the skincare industry – thanks to its amazing importance for skin health. While there’s a lot of hype around the word there are also many myths, which can lead to confusion when it comes to selecting collagen supplements. Let’s face it, many of us seek youthful-looking, radiant skin and a few less wrinkles so our multi-disciplinary skin research team are here to educate to demystify five myths about collagen.
Myth 1: You should only take supplements that contain collagen
Taking collagen directly from a supplement or drink may provide you with the results you’re looking for, but it is important to review ingredient labels. Why? Since a teamwork of nutrients are essential for collagen formation. Our Head of Nutrition, Lorraine Perretta, explains why:
“Collagen is made from amino acids found in protein foods. Most of us have enough protein in our diet, so the body already has the building blocks it needs to make its own collagen. What individuals may require are the synergistic nutrients to make this process of converting amino acids into collagen more efficient, and to protect the collagen fibres once they’ve been created. There’s little point consuming products containing collagen if you haven’t got the co- factors ingredients to convert it into the skin.”
Our skin researchers recommend prioritising protein as well as these important co-factor ingredients such as vitamin C, B vitamins and zinc in your diet and supplement regime. These all play a key role in the assembly and creation of new collagen.
Myth 2: You shouldn’t worry about collagen until you’re older
The key to healthy collagen is to be proactive not reactive. The sooner we protect it at a younger age, the sooner your skin will reward you. As we get older, fibroblasts become less active, producing less collagen that is often poor quality. The amount of collagen that we have starts decreasing by 1% every year from the age of 25, before we even start noticing wrinkles. We also lose around 30% of our collagen in the first five years after menopause, accelerating sagging and wrinkle formation. As a rule, prevention is better than cure and if we leave it too late, the damage is harder to reverse.
Myth 3: Collagen only benefits the skin
Although collagen plays a huge role in protecting the skin. It also has an array of benefits for the body as well. It helps support muscles, connective tissue, bones, and joints – win-win.
Myth 4: Collagen drinks and powders are more effective than capsules
Just like other vitamin supplements, there is no research or trials which show that one format is superior or better than another. At Advanced Nutrition Programme™, our skin researchers have found capsules to be the best format for our unique and bespoke formulas, and also match up with our guiding principles of purity, potency, production, and packaging.
Myth 5: All collagen supplements contain artificial flavourings
To improve taste experience, there are some liquid or powder formats which contain sugars, artificial sweeteners, or artificial flavourings to make them more appealing. We recommend reading the label to ensure that there are no hidden ingredients that might have a detrimental impact on overall skin health e.g.: sugar can lead to glycation which can accelerate the ageing process. Our Skin Collagen Synergy doesn’t contain any sugars, artificial sweeteners, or artificial flavours.
While there are numerous supplements with marine and other forms of collagen on the market, the approach of our skin researchers is slightly different. Our Skin Collagen Synergy prioritises ingredients to make your own collagen with 32 scientifically validated ingredients. A daily dose of these four capsules help to activate your collagen, brighten your complexion, and deliver fresh, youthful-looking skin.
*Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin.
